What is the white, itchy discharge after I've taken a yeast infection medicine, but it won’t go away? What else could it be?

The first thing to know is that generally, discharge is normal. However, when the discharge increases in amount, has a smell or causes irritation, you may actually be dealing with an infection. If you have tried an over-the-counter yeast infection treatment, you should see improvement gradually as you are taking the medication.

If you have ongoing symptoms after the medication is completed or are experiencing reoccurring infections, you should see your doctor for evaluation. If a yeast infection is still suspected after an exam, your doctor may prescribe diflucan to eliminate the problem.

There are other conditions that may mimic a yeast infection, though, such as bacterial vaginosis (an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina) or sexually transmitted infections. Because ongoing symptoms could be various conditions treated differently than a yeast infection, it's important to follow up with your doctor.
