The extraordinary care that you received while hospitalized at Nebraska Medicine does not end when you leave the hospital. After you return home, our kidney team will continue to follow and monitor your progress. If any questions arise after your transplant, our team is available to you, your family members and your local doctor.
After the Operation
Your new kidney should start to work soon after surgery. In some cases, you may require ongoing dialysis until it starts working. This can be facilitated in your previous dialysis unit.
You should be able to walk around and start eating a normal diet immediately following surgery. During this time, the staff closely monitors your progress with the appropriate tests to see how the new kidney is working.
You and your care partner play a very important part in making your transplant a success
- Nebraska Medicine requires all transplant recipients to identify a care partner to help with various post-transplant needs.
- All care partner expectations are explained during recipient evaluation.
Be sure to follow these four basic patient responsibilities following your transplant:
- Take all medications as instructed.
- Complete your lab work as scheduled.
- Call the transplant coordinator or your doctor if you notice any symptoms of rejection, infection or other problem.
- Keep regular appointments with your doctor.
Before you leave the hospital, the transplant coordinator and doctors will instruct you on the following:
- Your post-transplant medications
- Potential complications
- When to call the Transplant Office
