Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy Promotes Healing
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a therapy primarily aimed at promoting healing in joints, but new uses are being explored every day. It has also been used as a therapy for professional athletes with excellent results. Platelets are a part of your blood, they are filled with growth factors and are responsible for healing. The platelets are put through a process, concentrated, and extracted. This fluid of concentrated platelets is injected into sites of injury or degeneration to promote healing.
Conditions treated
Platelet-rich plasma therapy can be an effective treatment for many conditions. Some of the conditions this therapy is currently used for include:
- Joint pain, including knee and elbow
- Tendon injury and pain
- Arthritis
- Sprains
- Spinal pain
- Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain
- Sports injuries

What to expect during platelet-rich plasma therapy
There are two types of platelet-rich therapy injections offered at Nebraska Medicine. One is a non-surgical procedure done in one simple office visit, which normally takes 30 minutes. A single-joint injection performed in the clinic costs about $800.
Spine and sacroiliac joint injections require X-ray guidance and need to be performed in a procedural suite. A single-joint injection performed in a procedure suite costs about $1,200.
Standard insurance often does not cover PRP therapy, so it is an out-of-pocket expense.
