At Nebraska Medicine, we treat all types of common eye problems.
Nebraska Medicine eye care specialists are experts at treating all types of common eye problems, including pink eye and other eye infections. Few eye care providers have as many sub-specialists under one roof, from experienced general and subspecialty ophthalmologists who specialize in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of eye diseases, to optometrists who provide basic eye care, prescribing contact lenses and glasses and screening for the development of more serious eye conditions.
We treat eye infections that are caused by:
- Bacteria
- Virus
- Fungi
- Ultraviolet radiation or contact lenses.
Eye infections commonly occur in one eye, and the symptoms of infection may include:
- Pain
- Redness
- Blurred vision
- Tearing
- Discharge
- Sensitivity to light
Eye infections can damage your eye, so it's important that you visit a trusted medical professional if you have any symptoms. If the infection is superficial, with ulcers involving only the cornea's top layer (epithelium), it may heal without scarring. If the infection involves the deeper layers of the cornea, however, it may lead to scarring, loss of vision, and occasionally, blindness.
The eye care team at Nebraska Medicine is highly trained in treating eye infections and can quickly diagnose and recommend the most appropriate care for you. Eye infections are most often treated with medications, either in eyedrops or pill form. Depending on the progression of the infection, your ophthalmologist may treat your condition with steroid eyedrops to reduce inflammation. In rare cases, when the cornea is severely damaged by infection, a corneal transplant may be necessary to improve vision.
