A runny nose, postnasal drip and sneezing are usually symptoms of a cold and typically go away after a short period of time.
However, if these symptoms are accompanied by a decreased sense of smell or facial pain, you may have nasal polyps.
Nasal polyps are fleshy swellings within the nose which block the passages of the nasal cavity and the ability for sinuses to drain correctly. You can find out if you have nasal polyps and get them treated by coming to Nebraska Medicine. We have dedicated ear, nose and throat surgeons who treat everything from a mild case of nasal polyps with medication, to performing surgery if required. Nebraska Medicine specialists use a tiny camera to verify you have nasal polyps. Our specialists will be able to see if nasal polyps are blocking normal drainage.
Nasal Polyp Symptoms:
Nasal polyps may limit and in some cases completely block your ability to smell and taste foods. Breathing normally out of your nose can become difficult if not impossible.
Nasal polyps may be indicated by excessive nose drainage and sometimes into your throat. You sometimes will feel sinus pressure in your face.
Nasal polyps are found at all ages, but predominately in young adults. When found in children, doctors look to see if the children have some sort of condition that is causing the nasal polyps, such as cystic fibrosis.
If symptoms don't go away after three weeks, you should be evaluated by an ear, nose and throat doctor. Nasal polyps are considered a chronic condition. It often requires ongoing treatment to keep your tissues from swelling in the future.
