Post-Operative Osteotomy Instructions

It's important to learn about the recovery and post operation process of a Osteotomy procedure in advance.

Diet

Even though you can open your mouth a small amount, you will still not be able to chew for approximately 6 weeks. Anything blended or liquid is acceptable. You may also have any foods that are soft enough or small enough to be mashed between your tongue and teeth without chewing. These things may include any liquids, soups, scrambled eggs, applesauce, pie, cake, ice cream, yogurt, pasta that is well chopped and soft, as well as meat which is ground up fine. High-calorie, high-protein meals are the best with plenty of liquids. This may require eating a small meal 5-6 times/day rather than 3 large meals. You may also use supplemental nutritional drinks such as Boost or Ensure.

Weight

Weigh yourself when you get home every four to five days following surgery. Expect to lose seven to 10 pounds pounds following surgery. Attempt to maintain your weight after leaving the hospital!

Hygiene

Brush your teeth using a small amount of toothpaste and rinse your mouth with salt water and/or the prescribed mouthwash. Oral hygiene is the single most important thing you can do to minimize possible infection.

Activities

Take it easy for the first week following your surgery. You may resume most of your normal routine after the first week as you tolerate. Avoid activities that might cause an injury to the face (athletic like football, basketball, racquetball, weight lifting etc.) Aerobic exercise may be started after 2 weeks following your surgery.

Medications

  • Antibiotics: if prescribed, use as directed.
  • Pain medications: use only as directed.
  • Anti-nausea: use as instructed and notify doctor if relief is not quickly obtained.

Miscellaneous

  • Use ice packs on your face for 48 hours; your swelling will maximize by 3 days after surgery and may take weeks to completely resolve.
  • Sleep with your head elevated (2-3 pillows) for 3-5 days.
  • Use ointment on lips to avoid drying and chapping.
  • If upper jaw surgery is done, slight bloody nasal drainage is normal; use appropriate nasal sprays as prescribed.

Elastics

Elastics are small rubber bands used to retrain chewing muscles after surgery. These should be worn at all times except when eating or brushing your teeth and wires. Your doctor will review how to wear them and how long you will need them.
