Leaders in ground-breaking surgery
Patients who come to Nebraska Medicine have access to some of the most advanced treatment options available for the treatment of liver cancer. Some are not offered anywhere else in the area, many of which have been championed here.
Our liver cancer specialists work with experienced medical teams in hematology and oncology to bring you innovative and highly-specialized procedures to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
The liver’s impressive ability to regenerate led to a unique surgical procedure performed for the first time at Nebraska Medicine, which employs a two-staged approach to removing liver cancer tumors.
During this process, the surgeon removes all the tumors in one lobe of the liver, and then allows the lobe to regenerate for six to twelve weeks before removing the other lobe.
Other innovative surgical advancements include the use of less-invasive laparoscopic surgery for liver resections and portal vein embolization, a procedure where blood supply to one side of the liver is blocked to encourage the other side to grow and regenerate.

A range of treatment options
Established in 1985, our liver transplant program consistently achieves better outcomes nationally and performs more successful high-risk liver transplants than almost any other program in the nation.
Nebraska Medicine offers patients a full spectrum of treatment options to secure the best outcomes for patients with both primary and metastatic liver cancer.
Your treatment plan may include a combination of medical therapies, radiation, chemotherapy, laparoscopic liver resection, ablative therapies such as chemoembolization, radiofrequency ablation and radioembolization, interventional radiology, or even a liver transplant. This allows our doctors to choose the best possible treatment combination for each individual patient.
Less painful, more accurate diagnostic techniques
The liver program uses state of the art diagnostics and imaging, including endoscopy enabling doctors to obtain an accurate diagnosis more rapidly and with less pain and discomfort to you. An ultrasound performed by skilled operators in our high volume center can detect liver cancers as small as 1 to 2 cm. In some cases guided liver biopsy may still be needed.
